Sleep is defined as a state of unconsciousness from which one can be aroused.  In this state, the brain is more responsive to internal stimuli.  It is a dynamic activity that profoundly affects physical and mental health, and is essential for the normal functioning of all systems of the body, especially the immune system, which affects the ability to fight disease and endure sickness.  Sleep is a physiological phenomenon that, to this day, modern-day scientists still do not fully understand.  Restful sleep is essential for overall health and well-being.
